Poem #8 - "Dark polar nights"

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

Changed the question to be question of the week, a new question every Sunday, which is on my three poems of the week!

What's your favorite poetry-blog?

This is a piece I wrote this winter, as I had gotten sick and tired of the long nights, and short days us Danish get during the winter, and then I wanted to do a take on how it would be living further up north, where it is night half year at a time, and day another half year. This is also a take on depression at the same time, where as night is all the bad and negative feelings, and day is joy and the happy feelings. Excuses for any facts I've gotten wrong, as I haven't done any proper research while I wrote this, I just let my feelings run out in a stream of words. Enjoy!

"Dark polar nights"

Light brings me realization and hope
making me see thing clearer
in different perspectives

Hoping that the night would never come to me
but the ocean eat the sun for an autumn snack
as I watch everything fall apart

Hoping that the stars and the moon will
give me temporarily light to see things
that matter,
instead of focusing on dwelling predators
stuck in dark bushes.

I wait for the sun to kiss my bare forehead again
to witness the morning dew die
in it's almighty glow

I wait here patiently.
Hoping not to get caught up
in the
Dark polar nights.

  2. ah but the dark polar nights are right there waiting for us...i thought the oceans eating the sun for a midnite snack was a creative approach...it made me smile....but i could easily see it as well....

    1. Thanks! And indeed they are, we can't really fight them, only wait for them to turn to brighter days!

  3. The dark polar nights can be liken to something not desirable. It can get things off tangent and disrupt the equilibrium. That's how I read this! Nicely MZ!

    1. Me too, one of the greatest things nature can accomplish is to thaw away the frozen winters and create a beautiful springtime out of it!

  7. Oh, how well I understand this. It is SO hard not to get caught up in the dark nights here too. It is at least good when we can see the stars and moon, but when the nights are long and overcast it can make a person depressed for sure.

    1. Mmhmm, one can only wish for the moon to be bright as many days a possible, to get one through everything!

  9. M.Z., be your own sun, boy, and everything is gonna be alright.

Beautifully written piece, I hope to see these lights someday, it's in fear that men discover the essential courage.

    Take care and keep smiling.

PS.: My favorite poetry blog... hard to answer without being unfair to so many other people I love reading. Can I recommend more than one?

  11. Great imagery in your poem, MZ! I once lived in Scotland and agree that long and dark winters can make one feel depressed. I'll be glad when spring is really back.

    1. I actually know quite a few people living in Scotland, how odd! But yea, spring is going to cheer everybody up a bit i suppose, it is going to be great seeing the flowers come out and the hot sun lay it's eyes upon us all! :)

  13. It is always about the light then, isn't it? I wonder if the folks who live around the equator are the happiest? Ah but they have other things to deal with don't they?

  14. M.Z.,

You have captured that gradual longing for those brighter days, once we sense that winter should have moved on...I too want to see and feel sunny days very soon:)
Denmark is a beautiful country, which I enjoyed on my one visit in late November, almost ten years ago. I shall return again!!!

  20. I live in Australia where the sun not only kisses you but with its powerful passion tries to barbecue you...never mind just jump in the ocean for a swim...it is autumn here now which would be like your Summer. It is just different degrees of hot warm to not so warm weather here all year around.

    1. I've always wanted to live a place like that! I really hate the winter times, i see no positive things about it!

  21. The darkness you describe is quite foreign to me... I live in the Sonora Desert. Although, I have had periods in my life when those dark nights were purely metaphorical as I battled the black dog of depression. SO glad that is no longer dogging me.
